"Commonwealth Ave"

Commonwealth Avenue is a historic street in Boston, MA noted for its iconic architecture.  It can also be quite beautiful in the middle of a snowstorm, as this painting notes.  This scene was created first in pastels as the snow came down outside the bay windows of a Commonwealth Ave condo to capture the colors and feel; then it was converted into an oil painting.  You might say it was plein air - but it was very windy and very wet outside (not to mention freezing cold) and the window was the next best option.  The painting gets some warmth from the pinks of the late afternoon light.  The tree is ancient, and one can wonder what it has witnessed over the hundreds of years at this historic vantage point.  This was a joy to paint, as the subject matter has so much significance and the setting is always lovely in any weather.
